馬西摩維內利是一位跨領域的設計大師,他曾說過:「如果你可以設計,那你可以設計任何東西。」而這句話也對應他設計生涯裡,橫跨識別系統、平面、包裝、產品、家具、室內與建築各領域的廣泛作品。馬西摩維內利忠實於現代主義的理念,他的作品貫徹著極簡實用,從最簡單的幾何形式來表現。他最具代表性的作品為1972年為紐約地鐵設計的識別系統,清楚而易懂的設計方式,解決了原先紐約地圖複雜難解識別的問題,成為資訊設計的經典之作,直到今日人仍不斷被討論參考。然而,與其說〈最理想的愛情─設計大師蕾拉與馬西摩維內利〉是一部談論設計的電影,你更可以說這是一部愛情電影。本片紀錄馬西摩維內利與妻子既是工作夥伴又是愛人的親密關係,長達五十年仍然歷久彌新的深刻愛情。

Italian-born Lella and Massimo Vignelli are among the world’s most influential designers, their credits including the system of signage for New York City^s subway, the corporate logos for Ford, American Airlines and Bloomingdales, and furniture and tableware that set the standard for Modernist design in post War America. They immigrated from Italy to New York in 1965 and never looked back, working according to the motto, “If you can’t find it, design it!” They are archetypal Modernists. They designed with clean lines, big forms, simple colors and their favorite typeface was Helvetica. Yet as much as this film is a story of design, it is also the love story of a couple that stayed together for 50 years, working as equal partners, with Massimo^s restless imagination balanced by Lella^s sharply critical eye. Now in their 80s, they look back on a career that has changed the look of the world we live in.
